Table of Contents
Imagine a life without judgment or fear, one of forgiveness and service. This is the experience thousands have attained through consistent application of the concepts of A Course in Miracles(r), an internationally recognized day-by-day self-study spiritual thought system.
The book is unique in that it uses Christian terminology but evokes universal, non-dual spiritual themes including Eastern spirituality. It is not a religion but a path of love that offers freedom from fear.
It could be called the bible of the "spiritual but not religious" movement, and many students form autonomous centers that teach its philosophy. Its gentle words, wise guidance, and heart and soul opening meditations help us save time by waking up to the truth of who we are in fact. This is the original edition of the course, completed in 1972 before significant edits were made in 1975.
Chapter 1 - The Incarnation
The incarnation is God's greatest gift to man, bringing him the hope of salvation. It unites earth to heaven, and establishes a new order of truth that supersedes the old one. It also reveals the fact that man is one with his brother and God, and that this oneness is his eternal home.
First published in 1976, A Course in Miracles is a three-volume book that presents a self-study spiritual thought system. Although the Course uses Christian terminology, it is ecumenical in nature and makes no claim to be the only way of salvation. Rather, it is a reiteration of the core wisdom found in all world religions. Its teachings have already affected millions of lives, especially among the growing numbers who describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious." The Course combines profound spiritual teachings with far-reaching psychological insights.
Chapter 2 - The Son of God
A Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching that incorporates Eastern mysticism and psychotherapy. Its grand symphony of ideas has led some to describe it as "the Christian Vedanta." The book argues that the human condition can be healed through forgiveness.
It is not a religion and does not have any formal hierarchy. Helen and Bill do not claim to be the authors of the Course, but instead refer to themselves as scribe and voice.
The word Son of God has a variety of meanings. One interpretation relates to Christ's priesthood after the order of Melchizedek. Another focuses on the fact that Jesus never became the Son of God through his physical birth, but was eternally the Son of God. The latter view is based on Hebrews 7:3......but also relates to Christ's pre-existence. See also: God the Father.
Chapter 3 - The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is an equal member of the Trinity and a true part of God's own Being. He is the power that makes Christ's ministry and teaching possible on earth. He is also the power that empowers our spiritual growth. He will often bring Scripture verses to our mind, reminding us of things we have read or memorized.
Miracles in the Course are a change of perception, a shift from the ego's beliefs to the truth. This is a profound change of mind, and it has the power to transform the world.
A Course in Miracles was received through a process of inner dictation, starting with Helen's hearing of the voice that said "This is a course in miracles. Please take notes." It took 7 years to scribe and type the entire course, which was published in 1976.
Chapter 4 - The Kingdom of God
A kingdom is that territory over which a king reigns. Several New Testament verses refer to the kingdom of God. Of these, 88 percent refer to an earthly kingdom that will be established at some future time.
A Course in Miracles asserts that a change of perception and belief from the ego’s story to the truth is what the course calls a miracle. It teaches that such a miracle is completely natural and occurs all the time.
Helen Schucman claimed to have received the text of A Course in Miracles through a series of inner dictations, or inspirations from Jesus Christ. The Course uses Christian terminology but evokes universal spiritual themes, including Eastern mysticism. It is not a religion but a self-study spiritual thought system. It consists of three books: the Text that lays out the concepts, the Workbook for Students with daily lessons, and the Manual for Teachers.
Chapter 5 - The Divine Mind
Forgiveness distinguishes truth from illusions and leads to an experience of perfect love, freedom, peace, and oneness. This is the experience that all major spiritual paths speak of, and that A Course in Miracles teaches you how to have.
A Course in Miracles is a self-study spiritual thought system, which includes the 669-page Text that lays out the concepts on which its teachings are based; the 488-page Workbook for Students, which provides 365 daily lessons designed to teach you how to apply the concepts in the Text; and the Manual for Teachers, which answers questions that often arise for students.
The Course does not offer a specific religion or spiritual path, but it uses Christian terminology to make its points. It teaches that everyone is part of God, and that there are no exceptions to this rule.
Chapter 6 - The Power of Love
First published in 1976, A Course in Miracles combines profound spiritual teachings with far-reaching and practical psychological insights. A self-study system of a “spiritual psychology” it has already touched the lives of millions of people worldwide.
Its core message is that love heals. It is a powerful force that can change your beliefs, perceptions, and emotions. It can free you from the ego’s stories and lead you to a realization of perfect peace, perfect freedom, perfect joy and oneness.
Although it uses Christian symbols, the course is not a religion. It is ecumenical in its approach and states that "a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not." It is a spiritual and psychological path. Its three books — the Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers — emphasize experience over belief in a theology.
Chapter 7 - The Power of Forgiveness
Forgiveness is often seen as an altruistic gift, but it's also a powerful force for personal healing. It helps us to let go of the ego's need to control things, and instead focus on what's really important.
Forgiving others doesn't mean letting them get away with anything. It means focusing on what you can control — your own thoughts, feelings and actions.
A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a three-volume book that was received through "inner dictation" from Jesus Christ. It has sold over 3 million copies and gained a scriptural status in the eyes of many who consider themselves spiritual but not religious. But ACIM has its critics, especially because it challenges traditional Christianity and emphasizes self-study as opposed to adherence to a church hierarchy. It's a spiritual thought system that incorporates a combination of spiritual inspiration with psychological insights.
Chapter 8 - The Power of Service
Miracles are shifts from a lower level of reality into higher levels. They are quick, sudden, and dramatic, yet they substitute for learning that might have taken thousands of years.
They are the result of cooperation, not of force. They depend on the willingness of the doer to recognize his or her own and the other's inestimable worth simultaneously.
A Course in Miracles combines spiritual teaching with psychological insights and is widely used by those who consider themselves "spiritual but not religious." Its language is rich, poetic, and intellectually sophisticated. Its three books, the Text which lays out its thought system, the Workbook for Students comprised of 365 daily lessons, and the Manual for Teachers, have sold more than three million copies worldwide. The book is now considered a modern spiritual classic and has achieved scriptural status for many of its readers.
Chapter 9 - The Power of Peace
The power of peace is the ability to forgive ourselves and others. When we release our attachment to our own grievances, we allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with joy. This is what makes peace a miracle.
When we make a choice to forgive, miracles are the result. We become one with Jesus Christ and His atonement. As a result, we are healed of all the effects of the world and its dramas.
A Course in Miracles is a spiritual thought system that combines profound teachings with far-reaching psychological insights. Its three books – the Text describing its concepts; the Workbook for Students, with 365 daily meditations emphasizing experience rather than belief in a theology; and the Manual for Teachers, adding more advanced ideas – have touched the lives of millions worldwide. The language of the Course uses Christian symbols, but it is ecumenical and non-dual in its teaching.
