Whether you're a surfer dealing with the sand, an MMA fighter on the mat or a BJJ practitioner who rolls for a living, having the right gear helps you perform at your best. Besides making sure your clothes are comfortable, quick-drying and durable, you need to make sure they provide the right fit, sun protection and support. That's where rashguards come in.

Rash guards are designed to protect your skin from friction when you engage in water sports, but they're also perfect for a range of other activities. In addition to providing an extra layer of protection from the sun's harmful UV rays, they can be worn as a single-layer top over swim trunks, wetsuit bottoms or lightweight, waterproof shells.

They're usually made from a mix of fabrics including nylon, polyester and spandex or (rarely) lycra. This combination creates a figure-hugging, stretchy garment that's lightweight, quick-drying, flexible and naturally antibacterial and moisture wicking. If you're shopping for a rashguard, look for one with a UPF rating of 50+ to ensure that it provides maximum protection from the sun. Also consider the fabric's weave density - tighter weaves offer more protection than looser ones.

A lot of people wear rashguards while surfing because the wax used to secure their surfboards to the water's surface can rub against the skin, causing rashes. This is particularly common with older shirts that have been worn for long periods of time. A rashguard is an ideal solution because it prevents contact with the wax and provides comfort while you're in the water.

Rashguards are also good to have in your kit while swimming or diving because they keep the sun off your arms, which can help prevent burns and abrasions from the rough surface of a dive tank or wetsuit. They're also useful for wearing in the gym to help prevent scrapes and cuts from skateboarding or falling during a workout.

You can also find compression rashguards that have built-in pressure benefits, which can improve muscle recovery and performance by increasing blood flow, putting pressure on target areas and reducing fatigue. These rashguards typically feature flatlock seams to minimize skin chaffing and discomfort. They may also have anti-odor or microbial technology to keep you fresh and odor free for longer.
