Becoming a CNA in Queens: Training, Certification, and Career Opportunities

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) or Nurse Aides provide primary patient care to people who do not have the ability to take care of their personal needs in various facilities such as the following: cute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home care, hospice, physician’s offices, out-patient clinics, rehabilitation centers, etc.

The State of Connecticut requires that a CNA Training Long Island/Program be organized by a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of experience and at least 100 training hours strictly covering all basic theories and as well as clinical practice. Subjects include nourishment, physiology, medical health care, medical vocabulary, etc. Aside from that, students training to become CNAs must also complete 16 hours in the following areas: communication and interpersonal skills, residents’ rights, residents’ independence. Safety and emergency procedures, and infection control. Finally, in order to be certified on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry, the student must pass the state competency exam within 24 months from completion of training.

At present, there are approximately 155 training programs approved by the Department of Health such as Naugatuck Community College-Nurse Aide Certification Program, Manchester Community College, Housatonic Community College-Certified Nurse Aide Program, Tunxis Community College, Three Rivers Community College, Danbury Nurse’s Aide Training School, Bristol Eastern High School Nurse Aide Course, East Haven High School-CNA Training Course, Henry Abbott Vocational Technical School-CNA Program, etc. Training fees may range from less than $500 to $1,000 or more.

CNAs, in reality, are entry-level jobs. Therefore, after gaining several years of experience as a CNA, one can opt to pursue further nursing education to become a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

This translates to more than 3 million new jobs for the healthcare industry, wherein a larger percentage is allotted for CNAs. Currently, around 25,000 jobs are available for CNAs in Connecticut, which accounts for 2% of the total number of CNAs in the United States.
