Even, you can’t go through the school and college admissions with no birth proof.

When should you register the birth?

The government bodies, like Municipal Corporation, NDMC, BMC and so on, proceed as per the Birth & Death Registration Act. Its guidelines go as:

·         Birth should be registered within 21 days of the occurrence.

·         It can be registered under 10 years of its occurrence.

·         Afterwards, the Municipal Corporation will not address this problem. The applicant has to go to the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) for seeking it. 

·         The governing body will penalize. And you have to pay against the birth registration service.

Municipal Corporation:

1.       Domiciliary birth:

When an infant takes birth at home, it is known as domiciliary birth. Such incident mainly occurs in the rural areas.

Sometimes, it can happen in the moving vehicle.

From where can you get the birth registered in that case?

In such case, the birth would be registered at the  

·         Primary Health Centre

·         Dispensaries

·         Mother & Child Welfare Sub Centres

·         The regional office of the MC where the vehicle halted first during the child’s birth.

Who will register the birth in such a case?

The para-medical staff will issue it, if the certificate of birth is sought in-person. 

2.       Birth in hospital/nursing home:

The registration of the child born in the hospital or nursing home is done in the zonal office of the Municipal Corporation.  

The hospital authority will issue the birth proof. The applicant ought to submit it at the MC office while applying for the same. If you’re unable to visit the office in person, visit its website and apply for the date of birth certificate online. You need to:

·         Get yourself registered with the site of the Municipal Corporation.

·         Sign in.

·         Fill the application form of the birth.

·         Scan & upload the birth proofs, parent’s proof (Mother & Father) & address proof

·         Enclose them with the form.

·         Send.

Which documents are required to upload during online birth registration?

·         Letter of the hospital/ para-medical staff/  from medical record officer

·         Affidavit attested by the SDM

·         Copy of ration card

·         School leaving certificate

All these documents must be attested by the Gazette officer. Then, enclose the affidavit inked by the SDM.   

Does police verify?

Yes, the police verification takes place. But it happens in those cases where birth proof is applied after 21 days of the birth or more.

What’s its processing time?

Normally, a birth certificate can be delivered within 4 to 7 days. But delays can occur. And also the cost of issuance varies.

Here is the detail of the charges charged by the NDMC: 

·         Within 21 days –free of cost delivery

·         Between 21 and less than a year: INR 7 with a late fee

·         After 1 year: SDM attested affidavit + INR 15 as late fee

·         To search old record: INR 7
