Dolphins draft picks Why Miami doesnt ha

The Dolphins will be largely absent from the 2022 NFL Draft, electing instead to make their offseason moves via free agency and trades. That includes the first round, where Dolphins general manager Chris Grier Kenny Young Jersey has traded both of the team's selections in order to make win-now moves. Whether those decisions result in Miami's first playoff berth since 2016 (and first playoff win since 2000) remains to be seen.IYER: That said, Miami alongside the rest of the NFL watched the Rams mortgage their future for acquisitions that resulted in a Super Bowl victory over the Bengals. With that in mind, it makes sense the Dolphins would prioritize already-established players as opposed to draft prospects. The Sporting News breaks down the Dolphins' offseason moves, how they resulted in Miami losing its first-round picks, and how the team can still improve with limited selections in the 2022 NFL Draft: The Eagles own the Dolphins' 15th pick, while the Chiefs will pick 29th a selection Kansas City got from San Francisco through Miami. The Dolphins have traded significant draft capital in 2022 to secure offensive weapons for third-year quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, both in the 2021 NFL Draft and via trades.Miami first surrendered its 2022 first-round pick to the Eagles for the right to move up from 12th to sixth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Johnny Hekker Jersey move provided immediate returns in the form of Tagovailoa's former Alabama teammate, Jaylen Waddle: The rookie had 104 receptions for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns in 2021.(Miami also acquired the 156th selection in the exchange, surrendering the Nos. 12 and 123 picks of the 2021 draft). The Dolphins had the draft capital to make that move, however, considering they came into the 49ers' 12th pick after trading back from No. 3 overall. San Francisco used the trade to draft quarterback Trey Lance third, giving Miami first- and third-round picks in 2021, as well as firsts in the 2022 and 2023 drafts. The Dolphins included San Francisco's 2022 first-round selection (No. 29 overall) as part of a that sent receiver Tyreek Hill to Miami in exchange for the Dolphins' first-, second- and fourth-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft (the Nos. 29, 50 and 121 picks, respectively), plus two more picks in 2023.MORE: Despite having no picks in the first round, the Dolphins appear to be in the best position to challenge for a playoff spot since picking Tagovailoa fifth overall in 2020. The team has merely added talent and depth via trades and free agency instead of the draft.Hill, for example, provides an automatic boost to the Dolphins' offense. He should not only excel in first-year coach Mike McDaniel's offensive system (which gets playmakers in space and allows them to get yards after the catch), but also keep defenses from focusing solely on Waddle. Alec Ogletree Jersey Those receivers' combined speed should make them one of the top tandems in the AFC East and represent a ma sive upgrade in receiving talent for Tagovailoa.Grier on what the Dolphins will do during day one of the Draft: "We'll just watch Tyreek highlights." Marcel Louis-Jacques (@Marcel_LJ) Hill wasn't the only significant addition this offseason. Grier has been aggre sive in adding free-agent talent to the offense, including Cowboys guard Connor Williams; Saints tackle Terron Armstead; Cowboys receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr.; 49ers running back Raheem Mostert; and Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds. Those moves represent a commitment by Grier and McDaniel to Tagovailoa that has been noticeably absent in each of his first two seasons in the league. Moreover, they provided much-needed upgrades to Miami's offensive line and running game, which ranked at or near the bottom of the NFL in 2021. (The receiving corps ranked 18th).Finally, these offseason acquisitions will give Miami the most accurate barometer of whether Tagovailoa is its franchise quarterback, or if the Dolphins will need to move on to another signal-caller in the 2023 draft cla s (which is generally considered stronger than the 2022 group). If Tagovailoa doesn't pan out in 2022, Miami still has two first-round picks, a second-round pick and two third-round picks in 2023: just the draft capital nece sary to draft or trade up for a quarterback. The Dolphins' aggre sive offseason trades have resulted in the fewest picks of any team in the 2022 NFL Draft: just four. Indeed, Miami is without Los Angeles Rams Jersey three of its first four picks this year (No. 29 in the first round, No. 50 in the second and No. 121 in the fourth). The Dolphins also shipped their fifth-rounder and receiver DeVante Parker to the Patriots in exchange for a 2023 third-round pick.Below is a rundown of when the Dolphins will draft in 2022:RoundPickOverallNotes338102From 49ers (special compensatory selection)420125From Steelers73224From Texans, via Patriots and Ravens726247From TitansNFL DRAFT ORDER: The Dolphins don't have overly pre sing needs, upgrading pretty much acro s the board in free agency and via trades. That said, there are a few options that can continue to be shored up ahead of the 2022 NFL season:Offensive lineThe Dolphins addre sed a major area of need in signing Armstead and Williams, seemingly Day 1 starters at left tackle and left guard, respectively. But the unit still needs work, both at center and at the right tackle position. The Dolphins could focus on the latter with Michael Deiter as the presumed starter at center, or it could add another player to the tackle competition that includes Liam Eichenberg and Austin Jackson, among others.Considering Miami's O-line was the 32nd-ranked pa Dominique Easley Jersey s-protecting unit in the league, surrendered more pre sures than any other team (235), and had the worst pa s-blocking efficiency in the league, the Dolphins can't make enough additions to this position.Wide receiverYes, the Dolphins have what appears to be a terrific trio in the form of Hill, Waddle and Wilson. After that? Lynn Bowden Jr., then Trent Sherfield or Preston Williams. There will be no shortage of talented receivers in the draft who could step in to further strengthen this group.Running backMostert and Edmonds are in tow, but the unit is largely lacking in depth with Myles Gaskin likely taking on a smaller role and Salvon Ahmed being inconsistent since jumping to the NFL. Considering the de-emphasis on the position in recent years, there should be plenty of talented backs available to add as a rotational player.
