Are Chip Bags Biodegradable?

Among the most asked questions about chips is "are chip bags biodegradable?" There are several reasons that make it impossible to say "yes" to that question. One of the biggest reasons is that most chip bags are made of plastic, and not natural plants. This is not a good thing, because plastic can take hundreds of years to break down. Luckily, there are many ways to reduce the plastic used in chip bags.

Frito-Lay

Several years ago, Frito-Lay introduced a unique bag for its Sun Chips snack. This was the first ever biodegradable chip bag. The new packaging was billed as 100 percent compostable, which would decompose in 14 weeks in a hot compost pile.

However, the new compostable bags was controversial. Fans complained that it was too noisy. The bag was created from a polylactic acid (PLA) material, which is derived from corn and sugar cane. This means it is not as soft as traditional plastic bags. It also produces a different sound.

The original Frito-Lay bag was designed to be 85 decibels, but the new package is 70 decibels. The sound of a jet aircraft is 95 decibels, so Frito-Lay had to make the bag less loud.

The company says the changes in the design will help it achieve 100% recyclable packaging by 2025. It will also allow for other companies to license the technology at no cost.

Humble Potato Chips

Using plastic-free bags for humble potato chips is the eco-friendly way to savour a tasty chip without guilt. The bag is made of renewable plant-based materials and can break down in 90 to 180 days.

The small pouch can be tossed into the compost bin, which is good news for the environment. Jeff and Alicia Lahey wanted to help people enjoy tasty snacks without sacrificing the planet in the process. They teamed up with a local Ontario potato chip veteran to come up with the best way to package their savoury morsel.

While it's not exactly the world's first fully compostable packaging, it's the first of its kind in Canada. The bag is made of NatureFlex, a cellulose-based flexible film that contains over 90 percent renewable content. It's sourced from plantations certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council.

The company also produces the world's first commercially available, fully compostable packet for their All-Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chips.

Off the Eaten Path

Having a sustainable snack brand is not a new concept, but Off The Eaten Path's bags are. Their bags are made from industrially compostable materials, which creates a 60 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional packaging. They're available at select retailers, like Whole Foods, starting this month. They are also a good example of PepsiCo's investment in food packaging technology.

Frito-Lay has made it their goal to design 100% of their packaging in a manner that is recyclable, recyclable, and recyclable. The company is now on a four-year eco-friendly plan, and is hoping to create 100% compostable packaging by 2025.

PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division first introduced compostable plastic bags to the market in 2010, with its SunChips multigrain snacks. The bags were made from biodegradable corn-based biopolymer called polylactic acid. The bags were not entirely compostable, however. They were noisy when they were crinkled, which could lead to a damaging sound.

SunChips

Several years ago, Frito-Lay announced the introduction of a biodegradable bags for Sun Chips. It was designed to break down in a compost pile, resulting in reduced waste. But many consumers were not ready for such a change. Ultimately, the product did not sell well.

A recent survey conducted by Mintel found that 43 percent of consumers are likely to purchase Sun Chips due to its eco-friendly positioning. The company has also teamed up with Al Gore's Current TV to promote the concept.

However, some critics are not happy about the new bag. Despite being made from a plant-based material, the packaging is noisy. Some even say that it is louder than the cockpit of a jet. It's been estimated that the package is about ten times louder than regular chip bags.

In response to complaints, Frito-Lay has announced a quieter version of the bag. It features three layers, including an outer layer with graphics. A middle layer connects the layers and is filled with a rubbery adhesive.
