On Your Bike - Choosing the Right Cycling Kit For Women
Increasingly manufacturers are designing cycling products with women in mind to make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Women's clothing comes in a variety of styles and now meets the needs of every female bike rider.
Shorts - A well designed pair can change an uncomfortable experience to a fun one. Women's shorts are women cycling kits with a chamois padded insert, which is anatomically designed to provide padding where you need it most. Compared with a men's insert the padding is seamless and more padded at the front as well as being narrower and shorter. Shorts come in different lengths and colours. If you are shy of wearing Lycra there are several styles of leisure short which have a loose cut outer and still have a tight mesh and padded insert for comfort inside. These mean you can look relaxed off the bike but still have the benefit of properly fitted shorts.
Base layer -
What you wear next to your skin plays a critical role in keeping you warm and dry. There is a wide range of women's under wear including base layers and wicking crop tops. Base layers are specially designed to 'wick' sweat away from the skin, to the next layer of clothing through its fibres. Man-made fabrics have the best wicking ability. There is no point investing in an expensive waterproof outer layer if you team it with a plain cotton T-shirt next to your skin which will end up damp from sweat meaning that wearing breathable outer layers is wasted. In winter a warm base layer is invaluable as not only does it help move sweat it helps trap warm air close to your body. Ideally look for a bra that wicks sweat away too.
Make sure it fits -
To be effective clothing needs to fit properly, especially layers worn next to the skin. Jerseys are designed to be shorter and fit over hips and bust, as are waterproof jackets.
Tops -
A traditional road jersey will be tight fitting not just for aerodynamics but also for comfort as they stretch and move with your body. There are also plenty of casually styled jerseys that still feature the most up to the minute technical materials - but without looking like you are off to ride the Tour de France. On top of your base layer add a long sleeve jersey, Windstopper jacket or waterproof depending on conditions. Windstopper is ideal for cold days, while a lightweight waterproof shell can always be carried in case of rain showers. If you know you are going to be riding in the rain then nothing beats a decent waterproof jacket made of GoreTex or Event fabric for keeping you dry and comfortable.
Helmets, gloves and glasses
Helmets are an absolute must to prevent head injuries should you fall off. Most manufacturers now make women's specific helmets. If you are still feeling chilly a skull cap under your helmet will keep you warm. Gloves are essential - your hands are constantly battered by the wind and unlike your legs aren't moving to generate their own warmth. Padded leather palms are best for grip.
