In the steel-crisis, the companies Monninghoff/Gottwald and Henrichshutte are forced to lay off 4000 employees. The real-estate business LEG acquires the free spaces of the Henrichshutte and transforms it into a nature and business park. Modern factories and businesses settle in Hattingen and the city overcomes the demanding structural change.

During the war, Hattingen is bombed by the Allies 1292 times. The jewish inhabitants of the ghetto at the bridge Ruhrbrucke are deported to concentration camps such as Theresienstadt and Zamosc. In the so called "Reichskristallnacht" (Crystal Night) the Nazis burn down the synagogue at Bahnhofstrasse and scavenge jewish homes.

Count Engelbert von der Mark grants "Freiheitsrechte" (a lower form of municipal law) to the city of Hattingen, and the communities of Bredenscheid-Stuter, Niederelfringhausen, Oberelfringhausen, Oberstuter and Winz become part of it. The city of Hattingen is fortified with stone walls, defensive towers and five city gates.
