VERSATILE, QUIRKY & ELEGANT- THERE’S A DRAPE FOR EVERY VERSION OF YOU! - BY THENI ANANTHAM
Festivals are not just an occasion to meet your dear ones and have fun, it’s also the time when you can look your fabulous best!
It is not only important to look distinct, but also to feel comfortable in the attire you don. And what could personify this gorgeous energy, more than the queen of silks herself- the ethereal Tussar?
While the common term for silk in Sanskrit is kauseya, the term Tussar is traced to the Sanskrit name, tasara, the weaver’s shuttle, as mentioned in the ancient scripts of the Rig Veda. Silk fabric captures a special place in Indian customs; its rarity and subtle nature makes it auspicious to be draped in one, especially during ceremonies & festivals.
Tussar silk :
Tussar silk, also known as “Kosa silk” is majorly produced in the lush regions of Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Tussar silk is known far and wide for its luxurious texture and natural gold color, making Tussar silk one of the quintessential silks in every woman’s closet.
The versatile silk, which comes with a self-produced gold shimmer, makes it the perfect canvas for weavers to be a perfect base for printing, painting, or making the saris. Tussar silk fabrics are porous in nature, which makes them super comfortable to be worn in hot climates. These sarees are lightweight and are easy and convenient to be draped around.
An interesting fact about the exquisite Tussar is the origin of the silk itself. The silks of India are classified supported by the silkworms from which they’re spun. What makes Tussar silk a unique fabric is that it’s indigenous and comes from the Antheraea moths, which prey on the trees within the wild forests. These silkworms breed on the trees of Sal, Arjun, and Saja which are mostly found in the wild forests only. When these silk moths are boiled, they produce natural golden-hued threads. Boiling the cocoons of the silkworms is the most crucial step of the silk manufacturing process- and that is why they’re often called “wild silk”. Its natural sheen, lightweight, and affinity for dyes make it an excellent choice to be adorned this festive season!
Furthermore, the illustrative and sharp weave uses organic colours of an extremely delicate nature- thus adding acquiring tremendous ethnic value to the fabric.Tussar silk needs to be maintained in order to keep its beauty intact. Dry cleaning the Tussar silk is the best way to maintain the luster of this rich fabric It is important to dry the saree in the shade, as the color may fade if it is dried outside under sunshine. Using cold water and mild detergent to will ensure the shine and longevity of the magnificent Tussar silks!
