Tips for zeroing rifles & target
When it comes to hunting, we require our rifles for sale to shoot precisely and achieve the smallest possible grouping. However, the guns can only meet these requirements if they are in perfect condition and have been zeroed in perfectly.
Since, as is well known, many hunters "shirke" this task and are happy to leave it to the gunsmith they trust, this article is intended to illustrate the procedure for zeroing rifles.
Shoot the rifle yourself?
In any case, the answer to this question is “yes”! If possible, checking and zeroing should always be carried out by the gun owner himself , because, for example, everyone "looks differently" and it enormously promotes safe handling and confidence in the gun as well as one's own shooting skills. This can be decisive for success in many hunting situations.
Particularly on hunting trips abroad, there are hardly any opportunities to give the gun to the company gunsmith for checking or zeroing after arrival. Here the hunter himself is asked to check that his weapon shoots accurately and that there are no deviations in the point of impact caused by transport. Because this is the basic requirement for a hunt that is fair and animal welfare-friendly. It is beneficial if the huntsman doesn't only deal with zeroing and control shooting during the trip.
Preparation of the weapon and scope before zeroing
Before you go to the actual zeroing and zeroing, the rifle is checked at home for any defects and cleaned if necessary. Above all, the weapon should meet the following criteria:
Free-floating barrel (can easily be tested with a piece of paper that you should be able to slide between the barrel and the stock to the chamber without resistance)
Firm seat of the system in the shaft
Tight scope mount (loose mount is often a cause of sudden accuracy degradation)
Clean optics
Flawless deduction
Clean and de-oiled barrel without any dirt / bullet residue
De-oiled cartridge bearing
It is also part of the preparation to buy enough ammunition with the same lot number. A different batch number can also mean a different point of impact with the same load. Therefore, only ammunition should be used for zeroing that is also fired during the hunt itself. If you still have cartridges from another batch, it is advisable to use them up before zeroing in or to use them only as practice ammunition, for example on a running boar. Of course, this does not apply if the check did not reveal any change in the point of impact.
Only now does it go to the shooting range with 100m lanes. Act there only according to the safety regulations and do not get hectic. Sensible and safe practice, control and sighting-in takes time.
The optimal target target
Preparing for zeroing also includes using a suitable zeroing target. Since the target targets at the shooting range are often pretty badly shot, we recommend using your own target targets, which can usually simply be stapled or glued to the shooting range targets after consultation with the shooting range supervisor.
Ideally, the target should have a metric scale so that the shooter can read off the hitting point deviation in centimeters immediately on the target and then make a correction without having to measure it again. Furthermore, it is recommended that the target has a square rotated by 45° in the middle. Because this offers the advantage that the crosshairs case knives for sale of the reticle can be well aligned or aligned with the corners of the square, making it easier to capture the center of the target.
