I was fat. As a child I had been chubby, but by college I had become seriously overweight. When I graduated from college, my weight was 185 pounds and I was wearing size 40 pants. I did not look good. If it weren't for the fact that I had a young wife who loved me in spite of my appearance, and who encouraged me to do something about it, I might still be fat.

I started losing weight by going on a diet and exercising regularly. This was in 1981, long before there were any popular low-fat diets or gyms on every corner. There were no personal computers either, so I couldn't find information on the Internet. In fact, we didn't even have the Internet yet. We had to learn about weight loss the hard way, by reading books written by people who knew what they were talking about.
