During various stages of our lives, our bodies undergo hormonal changes which cause us to lose our hair (depending on our genetic makeup). Different individuals have different metabolisms of androgen in their bodies, which results in different levels of hair loss.

Hair regrowth and hair loss are both affected by androgen, the male hormone. Using prp for hair growth helps reduce inflammation and promotes tissue regeneration. Alpha 5 reductase interacts with this metabolism of androgen. DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) is formed when beta 5 reductase combines with testosterone. The main cause of hair loss is the DHT metabolite, which is a natural metabolite produced by the human body.

In order to fight hair loss and maintain/regrow hair, there are four common methods:

1) Scar-less hair transplants

According to Dr. Halaas, young men are typically apprehensive about having a hair transplant since they fear having scars on the back of their heads. A follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure avoids scarring because each graft is harvested with a tiny punch, which heals virtually undetected meaning you can still buzz your head after the procedure. According to Halaas, "grafts can be harvested manually by the doctor or automatically by a machine, which is faster but may be less accurate." Using individual hairs requires longer grafting, but it reduces recovery time with an 80 percent regrowth rate." That's comparable to the results seen with strip-grafting, which has a 90 percent regrowth rate.

There is a cost associated with each graft, but on average, a procedure involving 1600 to 2200 grafts requires about $7 per graft.

2) Cell Therapy

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is being used for hair restoration for the first time, although it has been used for years by cardiologists and surgeons. The platelets and growth factor proteins in your blood are separated in a centrifuge, and then added to your scalp to boost healing. According to Dr. Halaas, it stimulates blood circulation and can reactivate dormant hairs to stop active hair loss. This product speeds healing and improves the growth of transplanted hair when used in conjunction with a hair transplant.

A stand-alone treatment will cost about $1200, while the cost of a combined hair transplant will be about $450.

3) Treatment with laser light

Dr. Halaas says laser light stimulates hair growth by stimulating the synthesis of proteins and by stimulating blood flow to the area. When a man notices shedding on his head, he may be interested in laser therapy, as well as regrowth. Lasers have been shown to reduce hair shedding or completely stop hair loss in 80 percent of people treated for hair loss, and to thicken hair in 40 percent of people.
