Here are some really helpful tips for the new vapers either trying to quit smoking or non-smokers trying vaping.

In a nutshell: get a lot of information about what exists, then go to a vape shop and ask them to make you try different options.

Roughly, you have vape pens, sub-ohm tanks with premade coils, RTA, and RDA as the big families. Many ex-smokers buy 1 of each in this order.

But some smokers also try an inexpensive vape pen, don’t like it, and don’t try more: please don’t stop trying before you’ve tried a few different options.

Inside each family, some are MTL (made to inhale vapor in the mouth) and some are DL (inhale vapor directly in your lungs). And then bottom vs side airflow… a lot of options. So, to start somewhere:

  • Choose if you will rebuild or not. The choice is mainly between spending a lot of time customizing your experience (and fail often), or just buy something that already works (but will be more expensive in the long run).
  • Choose if you want to try new fun ways to get your nicotine, or you’re trying to replicate cigarettes?
  • Think about how often you will do it and if it will be on the go or at home.
  • Go to a vape shop and try what you read about. But: if they don’t help you to understand or try to sell you a product that came out a month ago (or is very expensive), run to another shop.

If you just need nicotine, a vape pen such as Yocan Magneto Vaporizer is often a good start, but be careful to choose well, many are bad. You can watch Youtube videos, search “beginners” on various channels.

I like more air and more vapor than a cigarette. I liked it from the beginning. But it seems I’m the exception. The only way for you to know your “side” is to try!

Experienced vapers often buy a battery and atomizer separately. Beginners can do that too now, but spending a minute (or hour) to understand max wattage and ampers is mandatory (or the shop can do it for you) for your own safety.

A regulated “Mod” battery looks big and heavy, yet is the best for 2 reasons: regardless of the atomizer you choose, you will be able to choose how warm is your vape, according to the wattage you set (simplify for a beginner, here). And also you will have a battery that lasts all day ( if you buy a vape pen, you need to buy a big one considering you smoke 16 a day so just buy a mod).

For atomizers, the choice is endless, so before you go ask a vape shop or purchase online, try to imagine what you’d like to try:

  • Big amount of dense, silky vapor (like a hookah), or a thin flavourful vapor that gives you that nicotine high faster? Usually, smokers start with the latter, because you can use high nicotine liquid and get off cigarettes more easily.
  • Do you prefer a short tight draw like a cigarette or a long smooth one like a hookah? For the first option, ask people about “MTL” e-cigs, and higher nicotine and pg liquids. For the second option, do not buy any liquid above 6mg of nicotine and above 40% of PG, and prepare to vape for 10 minutes to get your nicotine fix
  • Do you prefer tobacco flavor (if so, buy the expensive ones) or would you like to vape strawberry or chocolate taste?
  • Are you precise in what you want (and then you will eventually rebuild, but no hurry), or do you just want to keep your hands and mouth busy with a decent vape?
  • If you choose to rebuild, will you be at home (RDA will be easier to set up), or outside (you need an RTA to fill the tank in the morning and use it all day)?

And an important piece of advice: take your time. You will probably not have a revelation the first time you try. Remember that there are many (and many) options to try.

Be careful mixing cigarettes and vape, your health will get worse at first. Try to switch to vape only, when you have at least 2 e-cigs you enjoy (you do need a backup, these things break). It’s important you get what you want in order to stop cigarettes.

First and foremost, hydrate. Most e-juice contains propylene glycol (PG), a hygroscopic, which removes moisture from the body so you'll need to drink lots of water.

Don't buy your first vape online. Go to a couple of local brick-and-mortar shops and talk to the employees. Tell them how much you smoke and that you are interested in learning. If they teach, learn, if they sell, leave. You should spend about $100 out the door. That should include a battery/mod, tank, coils, charger, and juice. Don't buy a Cadillac on day one since you don't even know if you're going to like it.

Recommendations on nicotine content will vary but in general, using a high wattage, low ohm device you will probably be fine with 6mg but I would recommend not go higher than 12mg.

Some people find that PG is an irritant or have a mild allergy to it. It's fine to use high VG (Vegetable Glycerin) like 60/40 or 80/20 or even “Max VG” which have only the PG typically found in the flavorings. PG also provides the “Throat Hit” which helps those that are accustomed to full flavor analogs adjust to the change.

Try a lot of flavors. Some people say newbies should try to stick to tobacco flavors. The jury is out. There is a lot of variety. There is something to be said for Premium-priced juice but again, as a beginner, house juice is fine in most cases.

You likely know someone that vapes, talk to them. Ask a lot of questions and make them come with you to the store. For more info visit here - online vaporizer store.
