Whether or not you are a fan of the idea of building a house on the moon, you should know that there are a few major concerns that need to be addressed in order for it to become a reality. These include the environmental and thermal conditions on the moon, how the human body will adapt to those conditions, and the cost of building a house on the moon.

RETHi

RETHI, the Resilient Extra-Terrestrial Habitats Institute, is a not for profit organization funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The organization aims to demonstrate the feasibility of human settlement on the moon. This includes testing the feasibility of robotics and advanced computer simulations. RETHi will inform NASA's lunar missions, as well as inform future spacefaring technologies. The institute is helmed by Shirley Dyke, a professor of mechanical and civil engineering at Purdue University. RETHI is also aided by a $15 million federal grant.

Among the many initiatives is the SSMM, a competition involving over 61,000 students in 780 schools across the country. This competition is a joint effort of the National Center for Earth Science and Space Education (NCESSE) and NanoRacks, LLC. The SSMM is a competitive program that rewards students with the chance to participate in a microgravity experiment in low-Earth orbit.

Northrop Grumman

Several decades ago, Northrop Grumman helped astronauts reach the moon. Currently, the company is working to build the next generation of lunar modules. Its Lunar Gateway will allow future expeditions to land on the moon's surface. The company's Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module will serve as the crew habitat and docking station for future spacecraft. The module is expected to be ready for a launch in November 2024.

The company is currently working on the Human Landing System, which will be a new generation of lunar module. Northrop Grumman is also the prime contractor on the James Webb Space Telescope.

Purdue concept

Among Purdue University's many initiatives is its concept for building a house on the moon. This small-scale lunar habitat will be built to prepare for life in hostile environments. This includes building an advanced facility for high-temperature materials. It will also provide a space for Purdue researchers to build.

According to Purdue University researchers, a lunar habitat may be able to accommodate an entire city. This is based on a study that calculated the strength of the gravitational field on the Moon. This strength varies depending on the amount of mass below the surface. This study also found that the moon has a lava tube that may be large enough to house an entire city.

Horizon project

Several decades ago, the Army created a plan to build a fort on the moon called the Horizon project. It was a secret study that proposed an army base on the moon by 1966. This was a concept that sounded like a great idea, but it didn't work out.

Although the Army believed it could building house on the moon, the concept had some problems. First, the plan was too expensive. It would have cost US$5.4 million to build. That was far more than President Eisenhower could afford at the time.

The plans were also speculative. They were written before problems were discovered. Another problem was that the Saturn V, which would be used, was still in development.

Zirka project

Developing a house on the Moon is not as straightforward as it seems. A lunar base is not cheap. The cost of delivering a kilogram of payload to the Moon can reach six-digit numbers. There are many challenges to be overcome before the first colonist arrives. In the end, it will all come down to finding a location that is right for the job.

In the past, the best way to explore the lunar surface was to send rockets to the Moon. A recent study shows that 3D printers can make bricks out of lunar soil. These bricks can be used in buildings and to collect energy. This might be the first step in the quest to colonize the Moon.
