Magnesium sheeting was used in plane prior to 1950, but changed due to the widespread difficulties with corrosion. The first employs of magnesium in aerospace was in an mix called Duralumin, developed by German physicist Alfred Wilm. The steel covered aluminum, copper, manganese, and 2.8% magnesium. This aluminum alloy with magnesium in the combine turned the material that was the cornerstone for aeronautic structures being developed and tested at the time.

Also referred to as Durenener metal, the material was used to create the first effective entirely metal aircraft in 1917 called the J7.
