The Avaya PBX System in UAE (or private branch exchange) is a business telephone system that provides telephone services for the enterprise's internal telephone network. These systems handle all calls within the enterprise through shared lines, which are used to make external calls with traditional PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) providers. These systems were originally designed to save the cost of internal calls (no need to use the PSTN network of the traditional telephone company). Initially, the operator connected the caller by manually plugging the cable into the physical switchboard.

In the 1990s, the proliferation of ubiquitous data networks and emerging data standards (such as ISDN and Ethernet) greatly improved the capabilities of these systems while making them cheaper. For example, ISDN has enabled features such as call forwarding, conference calls, programmable caller ID and hotline desk (the phone number can be assigned to any port). The emergence of VoIP, the Internet protocol used for voice communication and its use of standard packet-switched data networks have enabled complete integration between voice communication and overall data management. Today's IP-based system called IP PBX uses the Internet to transfer calls via VoIP, while also being able to use PSTN to connect to traditional telephone company providers.

These developments mean that voice data can now be integrated into an enterprise's overall data infrastructure, which simplifies the installation and maintenance of PBX systems, and provides considerable flexibility and cost savings for implementing these networks. For example, an IP PBX server operates similarly to any other proxy server on the Internet (in this case, it exchanges voice data).

The SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard is used to control multimedia communication sessions on the Internet, so that any phone hardware that supports SIP can be used in the network, and frees enterprises from being locked into the shackles of specific providers and their phone standards.

IP PBX systems are easier to implement and manage because they utilize Web and GUI interfaces instead of proprietary standards. Most VoIP phone systems have a rich feature set, including automated attendants, voice mail, ring groups, advanced reports and even video conferencing.

It is also much cheaper to use VoIP for long distance and international calls (because it uses the existing IP network). IP PBX allows companies with branch offices to easily connect them to the network, thereby reducing the cost of calls in the office. They are also highly scalable because there is no need to worry about physical wiring. What the enterprise needs to do is to expand the network by adding additional data capacity or external lines.

Today, the trend of outsourcing data operations is growing, and IP PBXs can be hosted by external providers in the same way as any other data processing needs. In fact, through virtual hosting, an enterprise can completely control its PBX system by the administrator without worrying about its physical implementation or maintenance.
